Success for Stephen in the Sperrins |

Stephen Harkens chalked up his first win of 2010 at the weekend with a dominant performance in the Bike Dock sponsored Sperrin Duathlon in Cookstown.
Stephen went out with the lead group of 5 covering the first 2 ½ mile run in a time of 13 mins 30 seconds before coming into transition in 3rd place. He made no errors getting on the bike and within 200 metres took the lead on the hilly 10 mile bike course. By the halfway turning point he was 30 seconds ahead of cycling specialist Jonathan Dempsey who had made his way up the leader board to second. Jonathan continued to pull clear of the rest of the field but made little ground into Stephen who came into the second transition still in the lead. The second 2 ½ mile run saw no changes to the positions of the first 3 with Stephen increasing his lead to take victory in a time of 58:46 winning by almost 2 minutes from Jonathan Dempsey 2nd with Dubliner Kevin Donagher taking 3rd overall.
After a successful start to the Duathlon season with Stephen taking 4 podium positions and remaining unbeaten in his age group he has been selected to represent Ireland at the World Championships which are being held in Edinburgh this year. The World Championships are run over the longer distance of 10k run/40k bike/5k run. Stephen will be keen to test himself over this distance in the Irish Championships in just 4 weeks time.
