Whitehead Easter Monday Road Race 2010 |
|
Larne male veterans sweep the boards at the Whitehead Easter Monday Road Race.
7 Larne athletes made the short trip down the Belfast road to Whitehead to take part in a 5 mile race that was missing from the local fixture list last season but made a welcome return this year. For those who know Whitehead the race route started on Kings Road just outside the Community Centre making its way over the railway line onto the Islandmagee road, up to Bentra Golf Course, onto the main Larne Belfast road before dropping back down into Whitehead again on Cable Road then back onto Kings Road again to the finish again just outside the Community Centre. For those that don’t know Whitehead, HILLS! Oh, by the way, being a 5 mile race 3 laps of the above route had to be negotiated.
Conditions were dry but a blustery wind made them far from ideal. As the race got underway Craig Hutchinson was the first to show for the Larne team and was first home with a fantastic performance that earned him a category win in the male 45 age group. Next home was Nat Glenn who made up some time on Craig in the second half of the race finishing strongly to record a category win in the male 40 group. Bernard Brady, running his fastest race over this distance was next home closely followed by the resurgent John Agnew. John made it a hat trick of wins for the Larne men taking the male 50 category showing that his recent excellent performance in the Jimmy's 10k was not a one-off. No doubt Larne Council will be looking closely at John’s result so don’t be a bit surprised if John turns up to turn on the lights at Broadway at Christmas.
Paul Tilson was next home for Larne and ran yet another superb race to record a PB with Adele Neil in only her second race since returning to training finishing in a fantastic 33:53 suggesting that Adele is back stronger than ever. Hannah Fletcher in her first 5 mile race for the club ran well and should be delighted with her performance.
Taking into account the conditions and the course this was a fantastic performance by all Larne runners but special mention should go to the 3 male veterans who recorded category wins.
The race was won by Paul Rowan with Gladys Ganiel the first female athlete home.
In the fun run which took in a single lap of the course there were race debuts for Tierna Ramsey and Cora Brady. Both had great fun and enjoyed the experience of taking part as did both mums Toni and Rhonda.
All the runners would like to thank those club members who generously gave up their time to come along and offer their support.
