Superb Achievement for Justin Maxwell |
|
Congratulations to Larne AC’s Justin Maxwell who completed the 39.3-mile Connemara Ultra Marathon in the superb time of 4:38:18. In hot conditions and in only his first ultra-long distance event, Justin finished 8th from over 150 competitors and in front of some far more experienced and well respected Ultra runners - an amazing achievement.
Mountain Running
Four Larne Athletic Club runners took part as in the McVeigh Classic race in Castlewellan Forest Park last Thursday, as the 2010 Hill and Dale Series got off to a start. A record field of 134 turned out for this, the first of eleven races in the Mourne Mountains and surrounding area.
Ryan Stewart, on a break from university in Dundee, was first finished for Larne in an excellent 10th place overall, climbing strongly on the second major ascent to the summit of Slievenaslat Mountain. Andy Gregg was next in 16th having started fast but tiring slightly in the second half of the race. Brian Spence finished strongly in 120th place, with Elaine Hall also having a strong run to finish 157th, an improvement of more than 2 minutes on last years result.
Neal O’Boyle and Bryan Magee were the sole Larne AC representatives in the demanding 10-mile Silent Valley Race, which as the opening event in the 2010 British Mountain Running Championship, attracted a top quality field from across the UK. The race took place over a new course including the five peaks of Slieve Binnian, Doan, Carn Mountain, Slieve Muck and Slievenaglogh, a total climb of 4500 feet.
Neal finished 143rd in a time of 2:41:37 while Bryan finished 159th in a time of 2:52:44.
Thanks also to Kerry Stafford, Brian Spence and Eddie Finn who represented the club and manned the checkpoint at Slievenaglogh.
