Saturday 17th April saw the inaugural running of the Mid Ulster Duathlon at the meadowbank sports arena in Magherafelt. In total there were 64 athletes signed in on the day and the sun was shinning and it was promising to be a great race.
Shortly after 11am the hooter sounded and the race was under way. The athletes were faced with a 2 mile run, 12 mile cycle and a 2 mile run which ended with 1 lap of the outdoor 400meter running track. The first run was led into transition by Paul Carroll in just over 10 minutes he was then quickly followed by the rest of the athletes out onto the 2 lap 12 mile bike course. Out on the bike course things started to heat up between the leaders with local cycling star Johnny Dempsey working his way to the front. With Johnny and Stephen Harkens coming into transition to start the 2nd run Stephens legs were a little bit fresher than Johnny’s and managed to break away from Johnny. The race was eventually won by Stephen Harkens in a time 55 min 34sec second was Paul Carroll in 55min 41sec and eventual third place was Peter Savage 57min 15sec. The ladies race was won by local woman Anne Paul in a time of 1hr 5 min 57sec. Anne had a very strong consistent race and after a lot of injuries it was great to see her in good racing form. Second female was Angela Burns in a time 1hr 7min 56sec, and third female was Helen Doran in a time of 1hr14min 33sec. The first local male was Johnny Dempsey and first local female was Anne Paul.
